March 6th marks new Gnarls Barkley, the 3rd and final album. "Atlanta" is the latest work released from the duo since 2008 when they released "The Odd Couple." While the lead single "Pictures" released on February 26th, the remaining 12 songs will release on March 6th.

It's been some time since I had listened to Gnarls Barkley, so naturally I had to take a peek when the new album was announced. It's hard not to give a listen when the group comes out hot with a first album of "St. Elsewhere" in 2006 which included the hit "Crazy."

The melodic and wide range from Cee Lo Green is unmistakable, but while searching the credits for Gnarls Barkley is the second mastermind in the duo: Danger Mouse. I might be able to pick out Cee Lo's voice in a 50-person choir, but it made me curious to check out more of Danger Mouse's work.

Unless you're directly looking for them, producers tend to stay hidden behind the scenes. My first chance listening to work from Danger Mouse was his "Grey Album" in 2004 which caused lots of controversy immediately after its release. The album helped to pave the way for future mashups as the album is a combination of a capellas from Jay Z's "Black Album" and instrumental samples from the Beatles' "White Album." While some argued Danger Mouse's album was a copyright violation, the "Grey Album" was named the best album of 2004 by Entertainment Weekly. When I came across the album on vinyl, it was something I needed to immediately purchase.

Who knew that a problem causing mashup album would open so many doors...

Following the "Grey Album," Danger Mouse would go on to work on projects such as:

  • Gnarls Barkley (we know this)

  • Broken Bells

  • Danger Doom (working alongside MF Doom)

  • Various production work for Gorillaz, The Black Keys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Thought, Adele, ASAP Rocky, Portugal. The Man, and others.

Take a listen for yourself. Maybe there's a favorite track of yours Danger Mouse has played a part in.
